John McCain
The 2008 presidential election will be McCain’s second shot at the Republican nomination following an unsuccessful bid in 2000, when he lost a bitter battle to George W Bush.
John McCain is a Vietnam veteran, which can protect him from negative campaigning by his rivals – badmouthing a war hero is electoral suicide in the USA.
He won in New Hampshire and is tipped to do well in Florida, so McCain might yet be singing “bomb, bomb Iran” to the theme of the Beach Boys’ “Barbara Ann” as the 44th President of the USA.
But his age might count against him with the voters, and the ageing Frank Sinatra lookalike might be better suited to “This time we almost made it”.
