Republican Candidates

The race for the Democratic nomination might be a two-way fight, but the battle for the Republican Party nomination is still wide open – with four high-profile candidates still in the running.

In Iowa Mike Huckabee, the former Governor of Arkansas, won – and in New Hampshire, the maverick Arizona Senator John McCain won in a landslide. In Wyoming Mitt Romney, the former Governor of Massachusetts, was victorious although none of the candidates seriously campaigned – but Romney won again in Michigan in what was seen as a crucial test of his voter appeal.

Romney further enhanced his presidential credentials with victory in the Nevada caucus – by a huge margin – on the same day John McCain narrowly won in South Carolina. The South Carolina result was keenly anticipated because the winning Republican candidate in South Carolina has gone on to become the party’s nominee in every presidential election since 1980.

Meanwhile, Rudolph Giuliani – arguably the most well-known Republican candidate around the world, and New York City mayor during 9/11 – has not campaigned much at all, preferring to bide his time and save his campaign funds for bigger state primaries like Florida. But third place for Giuliani in the Sunshine State means questions will be asked about the future of his campaign.

The main beneficiary in Florida was McCain, who won a close race with Romney to make him the clear favourite for the Republican nomination in the betting.
