2008 US Election

Other Candidates

The US presidential race often includes independent candidates alongside those nominated by the two main political parties’ nominees – and the 2008 election looks like being no different.

Mike Bloomberg, who succeeded Rudy Giuliani as mayor of New York City, officially changed his political allegiance from Republican to independent in 2007 – suggesting he might throw his hat in the ring once the official candidates have been decided.

There was also speculation that actor-turned-politician Arnold Schwarzenegger might muscle his way into the running – although his subsequent support for Republican John McCain seems to rule this out.

And a failure to land the official Republican candidacy might prompt Ron Paul to stand as an independent – ensuring a three-way race all the way to the White House.
