Democrat Candidates

The race for the Democratic Party nomination is shaping up to be a straight fight between the youthful Barack Obama and the vastly experienced Hillary Clinton.

Although John Edwards, John Kerry’s Democratic running mate last time, has still not given up hope, the media attention has been on the close battle between Obama, the Illinois Senator seeking to become the first African-American president, and Clinton, the New York Senator and former first lady who wants to be the first woman to be elected to the office.

Obama pulled off what many deemed as a shock by winning Iowa, the first caucus, ahead of the more experienced and better-funded Clinton. Then Clinton upset the new favourite Obama by winning the party’s primary in New Hampshire.

The Democratic Party is preventing the states of Michigan and Florida from sending delegates to its national convention because the two states broke rules on when they could hold their primary elections. As a result none of the Democratic presidential candidates campaigned in the two states – but Clinton won most of the votes cast in both primaries.

In the Nevada caucus, Clinton won a close contest with Obama, which many commentators took to mean she had wrestled the initiative back from her opponent. But Obama struck back at the earliest opportunity with victory in South Carolina.
